Meet the Chapter Leader
I am a Tourism Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, responsible for Safety and Standards, since 2018. I did my MBA (International Business Management) with Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, India, BSc (Tourism) with Mzuzu University, Malawi, and I am currently in the final year of my Post Graduate Diploma (Climate Friendly Tourism) offered by SUNx Malta & Institute for Tourism Studies (Malta). I also worked as a Lecturer for 4 years in the field of Tourism, Planning, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship in the tourism industry with Blantyre International University (BIU), the University of Lilongwe, and Miracle Technical Institute. I am a certified trainer for tourism SMMEs, youth, and women. My research work has been on the Sustainability of Tourism resources, and Climate Change in the Tourism sector. My interest in sustainability and climate change began when I understood the issues and interlinks between Tourism, the Environment, and Climate Change.
Chisomo Mukumbwa is an Environmental Scientist, Climate Advocate, and Sustainable Development Practitioner from Malawi with more than nine years of experience working with international organizations and development partners across environmental management, climate resilience, agriculture, food systems, and community development. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) and is completing a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences at the University of Malawi. Her passion for sustainable tourism is driven by a commitment to environmental conservation, climate action, and community empowerment. Through her work, she has supported initiatives in ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and sustainable livelihoods. As Chapter Leader for Climate Friendly Travel Malawi, Chisomo is dedicated to promoting responsible tourism that protects natural and cultural heritage, creates opportunities for local communities, and advances climate-friendly travel solutions. She is committed to positioning Malawi as a leading destination for sustainable tourism while championing tourism as a force for positive environmental and social change.
